Starting in July: lovely in the sun 🎉
July is a lovely month in the Makkelijke Moestuin. A great time to start too.
You can start from February until November
It doesn't matter much exactly when you start. Because if you set up a Makkelijke Moestuin now, you're also getting it ready for next year. And the years after that.
You only have to set up a raised bed once. After that, you can enjoy it endlessly: season after season and year after year.
Shouldn't you set up a vegetable garden in March?
That's true for a traditional vegetable garden. There you first have to dig up a piece of land, clear it of weeds, fertilize it ... and do it all over again every year. Such a mega task is too much work for a few months of cultivation, so you usually start in March.
But because you can set up a Makkelijke Moestuin in no time, it doesn't matter when you start. You're preparing it for this year and for the years to come. As long as there is something to sow 😋
Why starting in July is so much fun
- In July you can sow plenty: from lettuce to endive, from bok choi to beets. For 18 of our 43 seed varieties, now is the right time.
- Everything you sow now comes up super fast, and before you know it your vegetable garden is full of beautiful little plants.
- Some vegetables grow so quickly - like French radishes, arugola, and lettuce - that you can harvest your first salads within a month.
- And finally: you garden in the sunshine 😎
Sow directly outside in your raised bed:
- bush basil
- basil mix
- beet
- Chioggia beet
- dill
- French radish
- cilantro
- purple kale
- bok choi
- carrot
- purple carrot
- dino kale
- Asian salad mix
- arugola
- chard
- lamb's lettuce (after mid-July)
- winter purslane
Starting indoors isn't required (but we do recommend it):
- Green Batavia lettuce
- red butter lettuce
- Chinese chives
- Crispy Red lettuce
- oakleaf lettuce
- crystal lettuce
- summer endive

I'm a complete beginner without green fingers, and I love this! Everything grows and blooms, and it actually works. Delicious food, partly thanks to the app. Really easy, and what a harvest. So if you're still unsure: just do it!
