The Makkelijke Moestuin in 3 minutes
You want a vegetable garden. A real one, all natural.
But you don’t have much space and no time to spend hours digging. And what if you can’t pull it off?
But you don’t have much space and no time to spend hours digging. And what if you can’t pull it off?
Nonsense. People make vegetable gardening way too complicated.
We don’t do that. Because since 2008, we’ve been using a complete system that anyone can handle:
We don’t do that. Because since 2008, we’ve been using a complete system that anyone can handle:
The Makkelijke Moestuin
With that:
- you garden with a clear plan
- everyone can harvest a lot in their very first season
- you hardly ever need to water
- you’ll barely have any trouble with diseases or pests – no chemicals, all natural
- and maintenance takes you at most an hour a week
How is that possible?
Because with us, you don’t just start sowing randomly—you start by getting everything ready the right way. That means you’ve already done 85% of the work, and you solve most problems before they even happen.
Let me explain:
You start by setting up a Makkelijke Moestuin box
You put it in your yard, on your balcony, or on your rooftop terrace... as long as it gets at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.
Hardly any weeds grow in it, and you can easily keep slugs and other pests out.
You fill your box with MM-aardemix. It's perfect for all your plants, easy to work with, holds onto moisture and nutrients really well, and stays nice and airy.
No need to dig, no stressing about special food for each plant, and once it's in your box, you never have to replace it. Just add some nutrients every now and then and you're good.
That way, you’re all set to garden successfully year after year.
The planting system
The grid divides the box into 30x30 cm squares. That way, you can pack it full of plants, every veggie gets just enough space, and you can easily keep track of everything.
For example, you can fit exactly 16 carrots, 9 beets, or 4 heads of pak choi in one of those squares.
You plant a different type of veggie in each square, and as soon as you harvest it, you put something new in. That way, you can use each square up to 4 times a year. For example: first radishes, then cut-and-come-again lettuce, then beets, and finally winter purslane.
We pick veggies that give you a lot of harvest in a small space. So, no regular zucchini, but a climbing variety that fits in one square:
What’s trickier is the timing: doing the right things at the right moment and in the right way.
That’s exactly why we made the free MM app.
‘An app?! But I want a garden so I can spend less time on my phone!’
I get it. But you learn gardening by DOING it. Not from a book or a course. But from someone who walks you through your first year and shows you everything. Like an experienced garden grandpa.
That’s what our app does. It tells you, bed by bed, how to sow your plants, makes sure every plant has enough space, and that they’re not shading each other.

The result
Do all your plants always do perfectly? Nope, of course not, it's still nature. But 95% of them do just fine. Whether you have a green thumb or not.
If you start a Makkelijke Moestuin, you'll be enjoying your first radishes in 4 weeks. A few weeks after that, you'll have mixed salads, in the summer you'll get tomatoes that taste better than anything from a 4-star restaurant, and beans and herbs you can't keep up with picking.
Your garden will become a lively spot where bees buzz around and you can totally relax.

Why we do this
Ever since we started with the Makkelijke Moestuin in 2008, we've been blown away by what growing your own food does for you. It's like some kind of antidote for everything that's not so great in the modern world.
‘A vegetable garden is good for the soul.’
We hear that every day from tons of MM-ers: face-to-face, on the phone, in emails, in the reviews we get, and in our active community:
