February in the Makkelijke Moestuin
Brrr, it is still too cold to do much. But set up your garden now and, with a little mild weather, you can sow your first seeds this month. You will then be harvesting from your garden every day from May.

February: starting in winter
You can start a Makkelijke Moestuin at almost any time of year. Even in February, although there is very little you can sow or plant yet.
The big advantage of setting up your garden in February is that you can start extra early, and you will be ready for the years ahead too.

Getting started on 1 March
By the end of winter, everyone is keen to get started again. It is great fun to do that together, whether you are new to the Makkelijke Moestuin or an experienced grower.
That is why we celebrate the official start of the Makkelijke Moestuin season on 1 March every year. During February, we send a few emails to help you get ready. At a relaxed pace, of course. 🙂

Already growing in February?
Already growing? Your raised beds will probably be almost empty now.
Any winter vegetables that are still there can cope well with the cold. You can leave them in place and even harvest from them now and then. They will not grow much for a while, though: that starts again when it gets warmer.
February is a perfect month to make plans and prepare your existing raised beds for spring.

3. Remember the birds during hard frosts: put out some seeds and a shallow bowl of water.
4. Check your seed supply and see whether your old seeds are still viable.
What can you sow already?
If the temperature allows, you can sow your first seeds in February. There are only a few varieties you can sow this early.
You really do need to wait with the rest. Even if the weather is mild, the days are still too short. Seeds have a kind of built-in clock. At this time of year, they stay asleep. 🙂
