Starting in August: enjoy the sunshine ๐
August is a lovely month in the Makkelijke Moestuin. For getting started too.
You can get started from February to November
Exactly when you start does not matter that much. If you set up a Makkelijke Moestuin now, you are also getting ready for next year. And the years after that.
You only need to set up your raised bed once. Then you can enjoy it season after season, year after year.
But don't you start a vegetable garden in March?
With a traditional vegetable garden, you usually do. First you have to dig over a patch of ground, clear the weeds and fertilise it, then do it all again every year. That is a lot of work for just a few months of growing, which is why people usually start in March.
Why starting in August is so much fun
- You can still sow plenty in August: from lettuce to endive, and from pak choi to beetroot. It is the right time for many of our seed varieties.
- Everything you sow now comes up quickly. Before you know it, your garden is full of lovely little plants.
- Some vegetables grow so quickly, such as French radishes, rocket and leaf lettuce, that you can harvest your first salads within a month.
- August is also the month to sow ahead for autumn. That means you can keep harvesting for a long time, with some crops lasting into winter or early spring.
- And finally: you get to garden in lovely weather ๐
Until mid-August:
Throughout the month:
- Green Batavia leaf lettuce (sow indoors briefly first)
- Cos lettuce
- Red butterhead lettuce (sow indoors briefly first)
- Chioggia beetroot
- Red Crispy leaf lettuce (sow indoors briefly first)
- Oakleaf lettuce (sow indoors briefly first)
- Pot marigold
- Coriander
- Cristal lettuce (sow indoors briefly first)
- Mini head lettuce
- Pak choi
- Mangetout
- Red and green leaf lettuce (sow indoors briefly first)
- Asian salad mix
- Rocket
- Sugar snap peas
- Lamb's lettuce
